Gwenda Thomas said it was important for older people to recognise the importance of exercise in helping them to deal with the onset of growing older as well as providing a way to meet new and old friends.
Mrs Thomas made her comments when she officially launched the Age Concern Neath Port Talbot scheme, EXTEND in the Community, at the Owain Glyndwr Community Centre, Waunceirch, Neath.
The project is intended to promote health, increase mobility and independence, improve strength, co-ordination and balance and to counteract loneliness and isolation to enhance the quality of life.
Mrs Thomas, who has special responsibility for Social Services said:
