Isles and isles of chocolate at the grocery store or candy store and who knew it was healthy? Is this a dream? In a Swedish study, it was found that there are benefits of chocolate on heart attack victims. Those who ate chocolate 3 or more times during the week benefitted more. The heart attack victims that did not eat chocolate were more likely to have a repeat heart attack than those who did eat it. Chocolate eaters were 3 times less likely to have a recurrent heart attack.

Resveratrol in red wine is known for controlling inflammation and promoting health. Until now scientists did not understand how the ingredient in red wine works. New research from scientists in Scotland and Singapore shows that resveratrol from red wine could be used to treat major illnesses such as overwhelming systemic infection (sepsis), appendicitis, and peritonitis (a serious condition related to inflammation in the abdominal cavity).

New research shows that freshly cut or crushed garlic is better than cooked or dried garlic when it comes to protecting our heart. Scientists at the Cardiovascular Research Center, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, report the first findings that the heart healthy effects of garlic come from hydrogen sulfide, released just after garlic is cut or crushed.

Researchers from Royal London Hospital say baking soda could be an inexpensive treatment that could slow kidney function decline in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The treatment was also found to improve appetite, in a small study. Baking soda to treat kidney disease, “when used appropriately, can be very effective”, say the researchers.

Results of a new study reveals a link between consuming animal fat from dairy, and possibly red meat, and pancreatic cancer. In men, the relative increased risk of pancreatic cancer increased fifty three percent - for women, the risk increased twenty three percent, compared to a low animal fat diet.

It would be wise to think twice when you approach a Red Bull vending machine next time. The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) of Belgium has launched an inquiry about traces of cocaine in the energy drink Red Bull Cola, says Lieve Busschot, the spokesperson of AFSCA.
