Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown is calling for action to ensure access to nutritious food for low income families. McKeown ,, s report to the Board of Health, "Cost of the Nutritious Food Basket - Toronto 2007 reveals that the cost of nutritious food in Toronto has increased by seven per cent in the past year and calls for measures to help reduce the negative health impacts of poverty.
Each year, health units across Ontario are required to determine the costs of 66 different foods that meet Health Canada ,, s recommendations for a healthy diet. The Nutritious Food Basket is a measure of the cost of healthy eating in each Board of Health jurisdiction.
