Top Health Insurance Plans

The National Committee for Quality Assurance and U.S News & World Report on Friday released an annual survey ranking the nation's health insurance plans, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

The rankings of health insurance plans were based on members' access to care, overall consumer satisfaction, coverage of preventive services, how well the plans provided coverage to members with existing health conditions and other factors (Akron Beacon Journal, 10/27).

A total of 246 health insurance plans were included in the survey (ConnectiCare release, 10/27). All health plans involved in the survey - about 25% of all plans nationwide - voluntarily reported their clinical performance data.

The survey found that three of the nation's top four health insurance plans are in Massachusetts: Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive year, Tufts Health Plan is No. 2 and Blue Shield of Massachusetts ranked fourth. A Harvard Pilgrim affiliate in New Hampshire is ranked third (Krasner, Boston Globe, 10/27).

The plan rankings are available online. For more on health insurance plans visit to www.ncqa.org
