One way to lose weight is to just stop eating. It sounds simple, but in reality you have to know what you are doing to get any long term weight loss benefits from fasting. Let's look at the weakness and strengths of fasting for weight loss.
Like most forms of dieting, fasting can be used to bring about dramatic but temporary reductions of weight. You can go on a long fast, taking nothing but juice or eating grapes or taking some other low calorie meal substitute for several weeks, and while you are on the fast you will certainly lose weight. However, during the fast you may not be able to carry on your normal social interactions. It's not so easy to sit around sipping carrot juice while the rest of your family is eating a normal meal.
Another problem with long fasting is that your body requires vital nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein) and your favorite juice may not contain them. Long fasting without proper medical supervision can be dangerous.
Finally, a major problem with this kind of fasting is that once you stop fasting and resume eating your normal diet, you are likely to gain back all the weight that you have lost during your crash weight loss fast.
So, does fasting have any place in a weight loss plan? Yes it does. Periodic fasting is one of the secrets of a long and healthy life. Our body's digestive organs require a rest from time to time, just as we require days off from work. One-day fasting done in a methodical and regular manner provides the kind of rest that helps our digestive system, aids in the elimination of toxins from our body, and, yes, also helps us to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.
How to do proper fasting
Here is a method of doing one day fasts: taking no food and (if your body is strong) no water in a period from the sunrise of one day to the sunrise of the next day.
Successful fasting has three stages: preparation, the actual fast, and breaking the fast. Each one of these stages is important.
Preparation: If you are not prepared both mentally and physically you will find it difficult to go one day without food. The mental preparation is simple, but very important. The night before the fast you have to take a firm determination that tomorrow you are going to fast, that you are not going to eat any food. If you fix your mind in advance then you will not start deliberating during the fasting day whether you should continue or not to continue. If you are undecided or waffling you can always find a hundred reasons why you should start eating.
Physical preparation is also important. The day before you fast you should eat a normal amount of food and take a good amount of liquids (especially if you are going to be fasting without taking any liquids). If you miss some meals on the day before fasting, then you may start feeling hungry during the fasting period. If you do not take enough liquids, especially during the night before the fast, then you will feel uncomfortable when you are fasting.
If you are physically and mentally prepared you will not feel very hungry while you are fasting. Once you decide to fast, your hunger just "shuts off" for the fasting period. This sounds hard to believe, but if you do it a few times you will see that it is true.
The actual fasting day:
It is best to do light physical tasks and concentrate more on intellectual and spiritual work during the fasting period. It is not a good idea to spend your time thinking about what you are going to eat tomorrow! If you have prepared yourself properly this shouldn't be a problem and you can use the time that you gain by not eating to do some constructive things that you normally don't get time to do.
Breaking the Fast:
One of the benefits of fasting is that it helps to eliminate toxins from the body. However, you can only get this benefit if you break your fast correctly. On the morning following the fasting day, take two glasses of lemon water. Put the juice of have of a lemon in one glass and add a bit of salt. (The drink should taste both lemony and salty). After some time, you can eat your breakfast. The lemon water will help you to flush your digestive system with a strong bowel movement and many toxins will be eliminated.
One day fasts like this can be done twice a month. This kind of fasting will give rest to your digestive organs, help eliminate toxins, build your will power and strength of mind. On top of this, the overall reduction in calories that you get from going two days without food each month, will definitely be one of the elements of a balanced and sustainable weight loss program.

#1 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
Hi my name is Rai,
I am 5'6 and 400-409 lbs.
I am fasting for weight loss. I am walking six miles daily and fasting. I want to lose weight so I can get the Lap Band and am only drinking Great Value Drink mix which is only 5 calories per 8 oz. Working out with weight training (Shake Weight) a few times a day. I am also taking B-12 and Centrum vitamins. I think that I am doing good though I am eating nothing and drinking low calorie unsweetened juice.
I think I am doing what is best for my body. Does anyone know if this is a healthy 2 day fast, because I am taking vitamins and energy pills.
#2 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
I believe in fasting for spirutual reasons. 7 day water fast weight loss may give good results. I have seen people fasting up to 14 days, but drinking water during that time. They have fasted not necessarily for weight loss, but for a reason. I guess the weight loss was the added benefit. I have not tried 7 days, but for two days only and have felt great.

#4 Not working?!
I'm currently on my fifth day of fasting, and have not lost any weight. Anyone know why? Please help!
P.S. I need to lose 20lbs
#5 Re: Not working?!
i was 5,10 225 lbs i was tired of being fat so i prepared my self to fast, i ate almost everday only about 200 calories then make protein shakes and took vitamins in one month i was down to 170 so fasting and the right amount of excerisce will help you get there... no one can lose weight bu sitting on there ass and not eating, your metabolism wont necessarily speed up but remain stable drinking alot of water may help speed metabolism but mostly try to walk a little bit each day
#6 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
I have fasted for 3 days before on a water fast and saw noticeable difference! This really works and it makes you feel so cleansed and boyant. I encourage everyone to give this a try and I am already starting another 10 day water fast.
Good luck to everyone x
#7 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
I have fasted for two days and only drunk water. It did help me to lose weight and feel much better, although I fasted for a religious purpose. The first day was difficult as I had some headache, but the second day was much easier. I have seen people fasting for seven days and more. If anyone does, you may want to talk to your doctor as well.

#17 My fasting way to lose weight the right way
I am 21 years old..im a kid who tried all kind of diets but lost only a few for a long period.. Like losing 3 to 5 kg in one month (this is if u're dieting without regular exercise) and i find it hard to do exercise as im working as a cook.. The thing is, dieting takes too long and sometimes we tend to fail our diet because of we're not physically and mentaly ready and strong.. I am not refering this to everybody out there.. Pretty much im refering this to myself.

#20 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
well, i haven't tried this. im 15 yrs old and my dad would not allow this! i have 1 meal per day prepared by him. although, until about 3 days abo, i used to eat snacks too, but i have come to the realisation that i am just NOT HAPPY about myself, until you can atleast see my ribs. ive tried eating nothing but just drinking 3 cups of water but my dad always makes me that meal, i hate it, even if im "ill" he'll STILL persists on me having it. im just not getting anywhere, its just bringing me down, if i ever told my dad that i was trying to diet, he would quite possibly kill me, my sister has recently dieted for 6 months and lost 6stone, hes always on her back telling her to EAT EAT EAT, i cant put up with him like that, ive even considered making myself throw up, but it just doesn't work!!!!! FML!!!!!!! -_-
heads up: im 5ft 8", and 187lbs, my friends and random people insist i look fine, i look healthy, but i think i look so fat, i come from a bigged boned family, which, i know, doesn't help ._.
#21 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
Your the same as me!!!! I really just want to be skinny with abs thats my wish so im eating nothing for two weeks with water and if i am forced to eat ill throw it up!
#22 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
If you starve yourself you will infact gain weight back more rapidly and add extrapounds as well onl a balanced diet and exercise sadly is the only way you will loose weight and keep it off
#23 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
You might be retarded. Just don't eat shitty food. Best answer yet.
#24 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
I think you need to change your goal from seeing your ribs to being physically and mentally healthy. Your body is still growing and changing as you are only 15! You may loose some weight naturallyalger the next few years as your body changes. I am 5'8 137 pounds, and I am 30 in July. I have two children and I gained 50 pounds with my first child weighing in at 200 before I gave birth!! I thought I would never get back to myself but I have...actually I am in better shape then I have ever been besides my high school soccer years. You CANNOT help your body without exercise and conscious eating. Maybe you could talk to your dad about a gym membership, there are so many fun classes like cardio sculpt which will get you toned up fast, and zumbe to kick some calories. I do step mixed body Pilates and Nike dynamic training and I feel strong. There are also trainers to help get you on a good diet workout plan that is appropriate for YOU. I think twice a month fasting is important and can be helpful in cleansing and boosting weight loss, but I think you should be a certain level of strength and knowledge first. Best wishes for you, feel beautiful in your skin, the healthiest most fit person is NOT always the skinniest!
#25 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
I was in such a similar situation as you. i felt so unhappy with myself. I watched my friend starve herself incapable of doing anything about it and still I was willing to do it myself even though it led her to severe depression. Please please please just do this responsibly. eat small meals five or six times a day and make sure you are as active as possible. I swear that just by putting healthy foods into your body and exercising you will feel happier and hopefully you'll be able to see yourself in a more positive light like other people do. Not everyone is built to be 100 lbs.
#26 Re: Can Fasting Help Me Lose Weight?
Actually, if you have fresh fruit and vegetables for a snack, it gives you energy with out many calories, and your dad would be happy to see you eating. You might try to reduce the carbohydrates you eat - eating some, but avoiding too many. Carbs are in things like rice, potatoes, and bread. Be sure to get in your calcium too - good for your bones (milk, yogurt, cheese). Then just try walking 30 minutes more a day to boost your metabolism. Oh, and drink 8 glasses of water a day. You want to lose slowly. If you lose some weight and still feel unhappy at what should be a normal weight for your height, you may want to see a counselor. Sometimes we think we feel bad about ourselves and blame the weight or body type, but it is really something else that is the problem. You need to remember we all are different and beautiful and lovable, no matter the weight. Don't tie all of your self-worth up in your appearance. Your friends and family would rather you be a little overweight than dying from anorexia or suffering from bulimia. Good luck!
