Like most forms of dieting, fasting can be used to bring about dramatic but temporary reductions of weight. You can go on a long fast, taking nothing but juice or eating grapes or taking some other low calorie meal substitute for several weeks, and while you are on the fast you will certainly lose weight. However, during the fast you may not be able to carry on your normal social interactions. It's not so easy to sit around sipping carrot juice while the rest of your family is eating a normal meal.

Another problem with long fasting is that your body requires vital nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein) and your favorite juice may not contain them. Long fasting without proper medical supervision can be dangerous.
Finally, a major problem with this kind of fasting is that once you stop fasting and resume eating your normal diet, you are likely to gain back all the weight that you have lost during your crash weight loss fast.
So, does fasting have any place in a weight loss plan? Yes it does. Periodic fasting is one of the secrets of a long and healthy life. Our body's digestive organs require a rest from time to time,just as we require days off from work. One-day fasting done in a methodical and regular manner provides the kind of rest that helps our digestive system, aids in the elimination of toxins from our body, and, yes, also helps us to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.
How to do proper fasting
Here is a method of doing one day fasts: taking no food and (if your body is strong) no water in a period from the sunrise of one day to the sunrise of the next day.
Successful fasting has three stages: preparation, the actual fast, and breaking the fast. Each one of these stages is important.
Preparation: If you are not prepared both mentally and physically you will find it difficult to go one day without food. The mental preparation is simple, but very important. The night before the fast you have to take a firm determination that tomorrow you are going to fast, that you are not going to eat any food. If you fix your mind in advance then you will not start deliberating during the fasting day whether you should continue or not to continue. If you are undecided or waffling you can always find a hundred reasons why you should start eating.
Physical preparation is also important. The day before you fast you should eat a normal amount of food and take a good amount of liquids (especially if you are going to be fasting without taking any liquids). If you miss some meals on the day before fasting, then you may start feeling hungry during the fasting period. If you do not take enough liquids, especially during the night before the fast, then you will feel uncomfortable when you are fasting.
If you are physically and mentally prepared you will not feel very hungry while you are fasting. Once you decide to fast, your hunger just "shuts off" for the fasting period. This sounds hard to believe, but if you do it a few times you will see that it is true.
The actual fasting day:
It is best to do light physical tasks and concentrate more on intellectual and spiritual work during the fasting period. It is not a good idea to spend your time thinking about what you are going to eat tomorrow! If you have prepared yourself properly this shouldn't be a problem and you can use the time that you gain by not eating to do some constructive things that you normally don't get time to do.

One of the benefits of fasting is that it helps to eliminate toxins from the body. However, you can only get this benefit if you break your fast correctly. On the morning following the fasting day, take two glasses of lemon water. Put the juice of have of a lemon in one glass and add a bit of salt. (The drink should taste both lemony and salty). After some time, you can eat your breakfast. The lemon water will help you to flush your digestive system with a strong bowel movement and many toxins will be eliminated.
One day fasts like this can be done twice a month. This kind of fasting will give rest to your digestive organs, help eliminate toxins, build your will power and strength of mind. On top of this, the overall reduction in calories that you get from going two days without food each month, will definitely be one of the elements of a balanced and sustainable weight loss program.

I'm planning to do this water fasting when I come back from holiday in 3 Weeks time. However what I don't understand is that the article says its a 24 hr fast(one sunrise to the next) so you eat after 24hrs, but how do people do Weeks of this water programme without food, or do you eat at sunrise and start the water program again for the following day.
I would also like a diet buddy which will make things easier for me and my buddy to be.

Can somebody tell me if during the fasting process did any of your body functions stop working properly as before because on other sites I've seen that people mention this being most likely an effect that is going to happen.

Hi my names stacey im 19,a mother of one and i weight 13stone. I am sick and tierd of feeling fat and thrumpy im starting my diet on monday, im just drinking water and exercising for 2weeks solid! i want to lose 4 stone altogether, i know i wont lose that in 2weeks but im guna see how things go, ive gone without food before and lost 6pounds in 4 days so think this will really work as i am very determind! i can never stick to any diet plans mainly because i dont like the food! or any thing else, so not eating i think is the best way for me, i wish everyone luck for whoever is starting this diet on monday, i will keep you informed on how im getting on :) GoodLuck x

YES, fasting does help. But you can also try the LOW GL DIET by Patrick Holford. You can eat 5 small meals with the correct cabohydrates in the right amount and combination and you'll have a permanent weight loss. This diet takes a long time to achieve but it is a pleasant way to diet. Google LOW GL DIET. GL stands for Glycemic Load. Good luck.

Fasting (water only) for 30 days, now on day 20. I feel great have lost the weight I needed to in addition to allowing my body to repair itself. Stretch marks from 12yrs ago have diminished & raised scar tissue gone down significantly. I have done this regularly with NO adverse effects, no loose skin, & the weight I've lost has NEVER came back. The benefits are numerous & if done properly are not dangerous & don't necessarily need doc supervision. Research for yourself, stop giving your power away to others & start controling your own life & listen to your body.

Fasting is not just for weight loss. Some do it for spiritual purposes and it's a great cheap detox method. Doesn't make sense when you're dumb to think it's only for weight loss.

Yes indeed! I went on a fast for 2 week... The first week I lost 11 lbs and the second week I lost 10 lbs. I have done this on and off throughout my life and it has always worked. P.S. a little exercise helps!

Hi my name is Rai,
I am 5'6 and 400-409 lbs.
I am fasting for weight loss. I am walking six miles daily and fasting. I want to lose weight so I can get the Lap Band and am only drinking Great Value Drink mix which is only 5 calories per 8 oz. Working out with weight training (Shake Weight) a few times a day. I am also taking B-12 and Centrum vitamins. I think that I am doing good though I am eating nothing and drinking low calorie unsweetened juice.
I think I am doing what is best for my body. Does anyone know if this is a healthy 2 day fast, because I am taking vitamins and energy pills.

HI Rai:) First off you should definitely consult a physician whenever you decide to fast, especially if you are preparing for a lap band procedure. Your physician is the best source of fasting information you have access to. Fasting is definitely a time of rest and relaxation so that your body can rejuvinate itself. If you decide to fast again please consult a professional as this can be dangerous to your body.

I believe in fasting for spirutual reasons. 7 day water fast weight loss may give good results. I have seen people fasting up to 14 days, but drinking water during that time. They have fasted not necessarily for weight loss, but for a reason. I guess the weight loss was the added benefit. I have not tried 7 days, but for two days only and have felt great.

Hello I'm 19 and was very overweight I got sick of it so I went on an all water diet but the trick is that it's not all water you must also consume fresh apples carrots steamed vegetables without salt and plenty of water (at least 8-10 glasses a day) and milk! You can lose up to 10 pounds in 5 days depending on how well you follow the diet and you can really see results if you exercise at least 30 minutes a day 5 days out of the week!
