Canadian and U.S. researchers think they have achieved an important breakthrough in the fight for finding treatment for HIV / AIDS. According to the study led by Dr. Rafick-Pierre Sékaly of the University of Montreal, whose findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine, the combination of triple therapy with chemotherapy could be targeted to entirely eliminate HIV / AIDS. Currently, only viruses that circulate in the body respond to the therapy, while those that are hidden in the cells of the immune system remain untouchable.

This year more than 100 mayors throughout the United States will be actively participating in the national HIV testing day (NHTD), helping to get the word out. In addition, the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA) and a private sector partner will distribute 10,000 complimentary rapid oral HIV tests to the cities participating in the Mayors Campaign Against AIDS.

The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) is proud to support the 2008 National HIV Testing Day (NHTD). Held annually on June 27, the event was launched in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of knowing one's HIV status and to encourage at-risk individuals to receive voluntary HIV counseling and testing.
