In another example of its commitment to meeting consumers' health and wellness needs, the Kellogg Company joined the Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid: Corporate Challenge. The Challenge is a program involving more than 30 companies promoting eating and physical fitness for families that is consistent with MyPyramid. The formal unveiling of the companies participating in this program was held today in Washington, D.C.

"Kellogg is pleased to partner with the Department of Agriculture in their MyPyramid Corporate Challenge. Our partnership underscores our long-standing commitment to meeting the health and wellness needs of consumers," said Celeste Clark, Ph.D., senior vice president, global nutrition and corporate affairs, Kellogg Company. "We commend the USDA for its work in helping families make nutritious food choices using MyPyramid."

Kellogg Company has long supported the USDA's commitment to MyPyramid and uses it as a focal point in many of the nutritional education tools the Kellogg Company provides. Currently, kelloggsnutrition.com features links to MyPyramid tools as another step to encourage a healthier lifestyle.

"USDA welcomes Kellogg Company as a team member of the 'Partnering with MyPyramid: Corporate Challenge' to improve family nutrition and end childhood obesity," said Dr. Brian Wansink, executive director for USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. "Working together we can begin to make immediate changes where family members work, live and play, which can have a lasting impact on child and family health."

Tools for Everyone

With more than a 100-year heritage of dedication to promoting consumer health and wellness, Kellogg Company is developing new tools and resources featuring USDA's MyPyramid for consumers and industry partners. Current plans include:

-- L.A.U.N.C.H. - Learning and Understanding Nutrition Choices and Health

Available fall 2008, this elementary curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade teaches students about healthy lifestyles and showcases the foundation and electronic resources of MyPyramid. The curriculum includes lesson plans and background information for teachers, student activity sheets, and "home connection" activities that get families involved, too. Kellogg will host MyPyramid on the kelloggsnutrition.com as well as kelloggsfoodawayfromhome.com.

Additionally, Kellogg is exploring the opportunity to partner with Knowledge Learning Corporation -- the nation's leading private provider of early childhood and school-age education and care -- to create a preschool curriculum for the L.A.U.N.C.H. program. This initiative will support USDA's addition of more preschool materials in September of 2008.

-- Fuel for School

This initiative provides support for Mom via in-store displays and information. The materials, including a booklet and Web site, will promote MyPyramid as a resource.

-- MyPyramid and Packaging

As Kellogg continues to lead the charge in on-pack labeling, they will soon include the MyPyramid icon on a number of cereals like Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Kellogg's Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies, All-Bran, Smart Start, Crispix, Mini-Wheats, Apple Jacks, Froot Loops, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and more.

-- MyPyramid on kelloggsnutrition.com

Kellogg includes multiple links to MyPyramid on the kelloggsnutrition.com site. This nutrition-focused Web site provides information and practical tips to consumers to help get the whole family involved in eating well and being active every day. It also offers educational resources for health care professionals.

-- "Virtual" Communication

Kellogg provides families the ability to sign-up for three e-newsletters to receive regular information and updates: Kellogg Kitchens, Family Focus and Healthy Beginnings. These newsletters, which offer moms and families with a variety of useful information, will each highlight MyPyramid at least once in 2008.

-- Recipe Brochure

On kelloggsnutrition.com, consumers can find a recipe brochure that provides both information about MyPyramid, as well as a collection of delicious and nutritious recipes that can bring MyPyramid concepts to life. This brochure may also be leveraged via Kellogg e-newsletters and kelloggskitchens.com in the coming year.

Later this year, the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion will hold the 1st Annual Partnering with MyPyramid Symposium, where companies will showcase highlights of their commitment to the MyPyramid: Corporate Challenge.
