Health Secretary Dr. Calvin B. Johnson announced the formation of the Parent Panel Advisory Council (PPAC) to study and improve the availability of substance abuse and addiction treatment services for families and communities. The council met for the first time today in Harrisburg.

"It is estimated that one-in-four Pennsylvania families is affected by an untreated drug or alcohol addiction," said Dr. Johnson. "Parents whose children have been affected by and treated for alcohol and drug addiction have a lot of knowledge to offer policy makers. We need their input to ensure communities have adequate access to substance abuse services."

The council will examine the availability of information on substance abuse and addiction services, identify barriers to and gaps in services and treatment, and make recommendations to improve the substance abuse and addiction treatment system. Based on the assessments, the council will make recommendations to the Department of Health to share with the state House Health and Human Services Committee.

House Resolution 585 directed the Department of Health to establish a Parent Panel. Membership consists of three parents from each of the Department of Health's six regional districts. Members were selected through an application process and will serve for a one, two or three year term.
