Financial Safety

Whether you are traveling for business, adventure or pleasure, preparation is the key to ensuring a secure and hassle-free trip and financial safety. Following are some tips to help keep your money safe when travelling:

Contact your financial institution. Let your financial institution know where and when you'll be travelling to ensure that your cards aren't suspended for unusual activity.

Carry only the cards you need. Bring only the cards that you need for your trip and leave the rest at home. Nowadays, Canadians can pay for purchases directly from their bank account easily, with services such as the Cross Border Debit, which enables Canadian cardholders of participating financial institutions to use their debit cards at retail locations in the United States.

Lock up your valuables. Carry only small amounts of cash and use hotel safes to store cards and passports.

Make a copy of everything in your wallet. Keep a record of all the cards in your wallet and the telephone numbers to contact should you have to report lost or stolen cards. You may also want to make a copy of the photo page of your passport or your citizenship card and your driver's license for back-up ID.

Protect Your PIN - As you would at home, use caution when conducting a transaction at an Automated Banking Machine or point-of-sale terminal, by shielding your Personal Identification Number (PIN) with your hand or body.

Keep your receipts. Save the receipts of all your purchases, and compare them against your financial statements when you return. If you detect any unusual activity, contact your financial institution immediately.

For more safety tips and information about accessing your money outside of Canada, contact your financial institution.
