Here is something new. It is about a special Emergency Department for Seniors over 65. I have heard of special Pediatric Emergency Departments (my hospital has just opened one) because children are not just "little adults". But now there is an Emergency Department that treats only senior citizens over age 65. Located in Silver Spring, Maryland, the ED has staff trained in geriatrics and utilizes an approach to care that is structured around the needs of older people.

Light to moderate alcohol consumption can prevent disability in healthy seniors. The results from a UCLA study showing that healthy seniors who drink less than 15 drinks per week and less than 5 drinks per day (less than four per day for women), have better overall health, and remain active longer compared to their counterparts who either drink heavily or abstain from drinking alcohol.

A new five-star rating system of nursing homes by Medicare was released December 18, 2008. The new system rates the 15, 800 nursing homes that participate in Medicare or Medicaid. These newest ratings were designed to help consumers, making it easier to assess information already posted on the website.

Many older adults want to remain active and independent for as long as possible. Seniors want to age in their own homes and avoid moving to institutions or nursing homes. Researchers are using sensors, computers and communication systems, along with supportive health care services to monitor the health of older adults who are living at home. According to the researchers, motion sensor networks installed in seniors’ homes can detect changes in behavior and physical activity, including walking and sleeping patterns. Early identification of these changes can prompt health care interventions that can delay or prevent serious health events.

CMS recently launched a new rating system to be used as a tool for consumers to access information about the past performances of every CMS certified nursing home in the country, including facilities in Kentucky.

Ideally, this decision would be made far in advance with adequate planning. Unfortunately, it is often made during a crisis, such as a severe illness or following surgery.
