Stiffness, soreness, downright pain. If you're suffering from arthritis, you're familiar with these symptoms, which can turn the simplest tasks of everyday life into painful chores.

There are over 100 types of arthritis affecting millions in America today. The causes for most of them are unknown, and cures are nonexistent. True, there are many drugs and medications for treating the pain and symptoms of the disease, but no cure in sight. And many of these drugs, such as NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), have undesirable side effects.

New hope for arthritis suffers is possible with complementary therapies. Though patients who are in pain often want to suppress the pain immediately, holistic healers aim at addressing the root of the problem through natural treatments, like herbs and other supplements.

"Arthritis is often created through the build-up of inorganic materials, minerals, poisons and toxins which have not been efficiently eliminated from the body," says Sandra L. Schultz, Master Herbalist. "These substances then settle into the weakest areas of the body, hardening and creating immobility and pain." Schultz recommends a thorough cleansing of the body with herbs and herbal formulas, starting with the intestines, then the liver, urinary system, and the blood.

Since holistic healers believe in treating the mind and spirit as well as the body, they look at potential emotional and spiritual factors that may have contributed to the condition. Schultz agrees, saying it is important to explore any possible unconscious emotional causes of arthritis. "People need to ask themselves why would they want to cause immobility in certain parts of their body?" she says. "Why their hands, or hips, or legs? This is a spiritual/emotional/mental base that is then reflected in the physical."

Schultz also emphasizes the importance of movement and exercise for the afflicted area; healing massage can also be helpful. "Regardless of pain, bring movement into the area through activity and massage. You can also do external applications or soaking in apple cider vinegar and water, which will help to break down the accumulated garbage in the body." For exercise, Schultz recommends yoga. A patient of hers with crippling rheumatoid arthritis had tried numerous traditional medical treatments, as well as holistic ones, all of which helped, but it was kundalini yoga that re-opened her "life-energy force" and led her back to a normal life. The formerly bedridden woman whose husband had to carry her up and down the stairs is now a kundalini yoga teacher.

In addition, proper nutrition can also benefit people suffering from arthritis. Schultz recommends avoiding processed foods, refined sugar, white flour and red meat. She also recommends drinking distilled water, which will help to flush out impurities in the body.
