    Only about 10 percent of teenagers needing help for substance abuse problems actually enter treatment, partly because of the lack of adolescent-only services in the nation's treatment system, according to a new study released today. The study also found that very few of the available addiction programs for teens received high marks for quality.

    In her first national interview, teen mother Bristol Palin called abstinence teaching "not realistic at all." Several studies published in the journal Sexuality Research and Social Policy agree, finding that abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education programs do not delay the onset of their sexual activity and provide inaccurate information about condoms. Another study published in the January issue of Pediatrics found that kids who made "virginity pledges" not only had sex at the same rates as nonpledgers, but were also less likely to practice safe sex.

    A new study suggests that teens and young adults who use marijuana heavily may experience brain abnormalities. According to lead author Manzar Ashtari, Ph.D., director of the Diffusion Image Analysis and Brain Morphometry Laboratory in the Radiology Department of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, "Studies of normal brain development reveal critical areas of the brain that develop during late adolescence, and our study shows that heavy cannabis use is associated with damage in those brain regions."

    Sixteen-year-old Lauryn Louise Last is charged with murder of her infant son from drowning. She is believed to have given birth to her infant son December 31. Last allegedly put the infant face down in the toilet, then tossed him in the trash after placing him in a garbage bag found amidst sixty tons of trash in Tacoma Washington. The teenager was charged with murder January 7, and is being held on $500,000 bail.
