Dads need tools, not only to fix their cars and homes, but to build their role as a father figure.
Father Involvement Initiative is designed to support the development of nurturing relationships between children and fathers and/or significant male role models. The initiative, funded in partnership with the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton, makes these tools available to dads in Lambton County.
One activity offered is Dads Connect. This 4-week session, for fathers only, is designed to support the development of specific parenting skills in a secure, non-judgmental situation. What makes the program unique is the fact that participants identify topics they want to discuss so they can meet their own parenting needs such as:
How to relate to a newborn.
How and what to read to children.
How to manage time and responsibilities as a new parent.
Howard Ford, Father Involvement Coordinator, says "The role of the male, with respect to their influence on child development, is critical. We engage fathers through activities that develop their skills as parents. Fathers can learn to create and nurture bonds with their children and actively participate in parenting in meaningful ways."
