Dr. Joanna Dolgoff is a pediatrician and child obesity specialist. She has created a child weight loss program that boasts over a 90% success rate and featured on television news programs, such as WNBC, Fox 5 Morning Show, and The Today Show. If you can’t enroll in one of her programs, perhaps you will benefit from her new book she calls “Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right.

"Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right is a smart, creative way to start changing a growing problem in America,” said Ali Vincent, winner of The Biggest Loser and author of Believe It, Be It. “It gives kids and their parents a fun way to learn and apply healthy knowledge to everyday activities.”

Today, one out of every three children is either overweight or obese, a number that has increased by 50% over the past two decades. 80% of overweight children (age 10 to 15) will go on to become obese adults. It is imperative, Dr. Dolgoff says, to recognize and treat an overweight child as soon as possible.

In her book, Dr. Dolgoff teaches readers healthy choices by making reference to a long-time favorite childhood game. Lessons are made to be fun to show the power of healthful eating, and not promote feelings of guilt or shame surrounding excess weight. Dr. Dolgoff color-codes more than 1,000 foods using the principles of a traffic light: green foods are nutritious (Go!) and red foods are occasional treats (Stop!). Yellow foods indicate those to use caution, and eat in moderation.

The program is designed so that each child (age 4 and up) eats three meals and two snacks each day. Food selections are based on the child’s height, weight, gender and age. And your child will not feel like he or she is on a diet, as it is not extremely low calorie or reliant upon strange non-kid-friendly foods. And children are actually encouraged to treat themselves (responsibly) throughout the plan. The book also contains sample menus, recipes, 50 fun activities for exercise and tips for dining out, going to birthday parties and celebrating the holidays.
