The Associated Press has announced that some California Anthem Blue Cross insurance consumers will see an average increase of almost 15% in their healthcare premiums. According to the Department of Managed Health Care, the increase will affect more than 150,000 policyholders.

Spokeswoman Kristin Binns states that the increase represents “an economic reality throughout the entire industry and reflect the fact that health care costs continue to escalate faster than the growth of premiums.”

Lynne Randolph of the DMHC states that the insurance premium increases are “not unreasonable or unjustified” and are a result of ensuring compliance with the federal law that 80% of all premiums must be spent on medical care.

The insurance increase will take effect on May 1.
