Sinus Infections
Recent studies indicate that standard antibiotics and steroid nose sprays provide little to no relief of symptoms associated with sinus infections. People suffering from sinus problems generally improved within about two weeks whether they took antibiotics, steroids, or placebos.
One such study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers randomly assigned 240 adults various treatments including amoxicillin, steroid nose spray and placebos. Patients on the drugs didn't get better more quickly than those using the placebos.
Antibiotics, particularly amoxicillin, are among the most commonly prescribed medicines for sinus infections. Amoxicillin can cause possible side effects including fever, flu symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, and possibly seizure, possible allergic reactions and drug interactions.
As indicated by the recent study, an individual seeking relief from a sinus infection could pay for a doctor's visit and a prescription without experiencing symptom relief. Instead, the person may suffer side effects from the prescribed antibiotics.
