Gastric bypass surgery in obese people significantly improves quality of life by cutting the risk for cancers, diabetes and a number of other diseases.

Bariatric surgery - gastric bypass surgery - is designed to control the way food passes from stomach to small intestine. Those people who have had the weight loss surgery have significantly cut the amount of food that they consume. The surgery is being done in obese people to help lose weight, and studies show that the surgery cuts the risk for numerous diseases as well.

A team of researchers from McGill University in Montreal examined two groups of obese patients with 1035 and 5746 with matching sexes, ages, and weight. Study participants were about 100 pounds (45 kg) more in weight than they should. The participants in the first group passed bypass surgery and the ones in second group didn't.

It is already known that obesity increases the risk for numerous cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, skin cancer, uterine cancer, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Analysis of data from these patients showed that those passed bariatric surgery have decreased risk for cancers, particularly breast cancer risk decreased by 85% and colon cancer risk decreased by 70%.

Another study by researchers from Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh examined 49 obese patients and showed that gastric bypass surgery enables obese patients to take steroids tor asthma and arthritis treatment.

One more study by researchers from Duke University Medical Center examined 314 obese patients with diabetes. 71 out of all patients were suffering from severe form of diabetes. All of the study participants have had bariatric surgery. Researchers looked at the patients 12 months after the surgery and found that Gastric bypass surgery changed the way of hormone secretion from pancreas and to improve diabetes patients' health.

All patients reduced the number of diabetic medications taken after the surgery, and those with severe form of the disease had a 48% of health improvement.

These researches show that gastric bypass surgery and other ways of losing weight is not just a matter of loosing weight, it also significantly improves overall heath and extends life duration for obese people because it is known that obese people live shorter than those with normal weight.
