Here is the letter from Debra Crew (Pedigree US General Manager) about the dog food recall.

Today, we're announcing a voluntary recall of selected bags of PEDIGREE Small Crunchy Bites Complete Nutrition and PEDIGREE Large Breed Food For Dogs, both of which are made in our Everson, PA facility. Thankfully, there haven't been any reports of pets being affected by our food in this recall; however, we feel we must take this action as a precautionary measure after we were alerted of a possible link between dry dog pet food produced at the Everson plant and two isolated cases of people infected by Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

While none of the pet foods found in the homes were determined to contain Salmonella, the strain of Salmonella Schwarzengrund involved in the illnesses was detected in the Everson plant where some PEDIGREE products are produced.

You should know that we have numerous facilities throughout the country and Everson represents a very small portion of our manufacturing base (2.7%) of total PEDIGREE production. Rest assured, you can continue to have confidence in the quality and safety of products produced at all our other facilities.

We realize how important dogs are to your family. We are dog lovers too. And implementing this safety measure immediately is the best way we can protect them, their owners and the families who feed and trust PEDIGREE.

Please know we are doing all we can to make sure that these foods are no longer on store shelves. If, however, you believe you have purchased products affected by this voluntary recall, please return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. If you want more information on specific product details and other information please visit www.petcare.mars.com

As the makers of PEDIGREE, our number one priority has always been, and continues to be, the health and welfare of pets and their owners.

Sincerely
Debra Crew

Your comments...

I've fed Pedigree for years

I've not had a problem with my dog being sick and this is the first i've heard of the recall. My dog has never turned her nose up at her food and is very healthy. She does not get canned food often and I don't keep the bags once I our them in the can I keep her food in.

I would hate to have to switch foods with her as she has a sensitive stomach and does not do well when switching.

All three of my dogs were sick!

I have three dogs, various sizes... All of them have been sick at different times the past few weeks. I fed them Pedigree dry and canned food. I used to feed them (dry) Purina Little Bites and never saw any evidence of being sick at their stomachs. Probably will go back to Purina. Better safe than sorry! As for the Pedigree canned food, my dogs don't seem to like it as much as they once did. I may go back to Science Diet canned food. They seemed to like that very much.

I just can't understand why these manufacturers cannot maintain a constant assurance of quality. It takes diligence and a dedication to maintain the integrity of their product. Closer attention must be paid to making absolute certain their foods are healthful. In other words, "I wouldn't sell to you something that I wouldn't feed my own dogs!!"

Canned food

Last week we switched our dog to Pedigree canned food. She was immediately very ill: vomiting, lethargic and she had a fever, the vet said it might have been an infection or something she ate. We took her off the Pedigree right away, and she has been better. She does not eat Pedigree dry food. Does anyone know if the canned food has been affected? Have other dogs been sick from the canned food?

Disappointed!

I have given my dog Pedigree since he was a puppy and he is 3 years old now. Recent recalls, especially this one, has prompted me to stop giving my dog Pedigree. My dog is one of the family and if anything ever happened to him, I would be devestated. He did throw up several times the other day and I did not think anything because he has done this before after eating too fast, but now I know why. He is fine now, thank God! My condolences to the people who have lost part of their family due to this.

What makes this even worse is that I went to Petsmart last night, where I purchased the Pedigree, and they were unaware of the recall! The bag of dog food I had did have the exact bar code numbers listed in the letter. They did allow me to exchange it for another brand, but I just could not believe that a major pet store was unaware of the recall. Whoever is in charge of this problem needs to be fired!! EVERY store that sells Pedigree should have been aware of this recall....animals have died from this and it is ludacris that everyone does not know. Pedigree needs to announce this recall on national TV before more pets lives are taken. I WILL NEVER USE PEDIGREE AGAIN!

One last thought, I empathize with all the people who have lost their pets.

ALL RECALLED

I just got a call from my friend who works for Mars told me all pedigree should be recalled. Some of their plants are even being shut down because of this. they never fixed the problem from the last recall and now the FDA is poking around and is saying that Mars maybe shut down. also its not only the pedigree they are having problems with. They are having a problem ith all Mars animal food. SO PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANYTHING WHAT SO EVER MADE BY MARS.
will make another comment when i have more information.
The three foods best for a person to give their dogs are
Royal Canin
Verus
Precise
they have been around a long time and never have had a problem

my healthy dog

i have always used pedigree for my dogs and the puppies my dogs have breed. NEVER again will i use this food, it is recalled every year, something is going on and i just assume use cat food for my dogs than to worry about pedigree killing my dogs. the makers of this dog food obvisouly does not own pets. some people consider their pets as family not just mistake like the dogs food company!!

last straw

Luckily my state has not been recalled, however this is the last straw for me. I think I should stop while I am ahead. I will be changed my two dog's food over from Pedigree to Purina. My rabbits eat Purina, so now all the animals will. Can't wait to be able to supplement their food more with a BARF (raw) diet once I have a farm going.

MY 2 DOGS ARE VERY SICK NOW FROM PEDIGREE

I ALWAYS FEED MY DOGS BENEFUL, MY HUSBAND WENT TO THE STORE AND THEY WERE OUT OF IT. SO JUST OUR LUCK HE PICKS UP A BAG OF PEDIGREE SMALL CRUNCHY BITES COMPLETE NUTRITION ! WELL MY VERY HEALTHY DOGS HAVE BEEN HAVE BLOODY STOOLS, DIHEARRA, AND VOMITTING AND SEVER WHEEZING TO THE POINT WHERE THEY CAN'T SLEEP AND NEITHER HAVE I BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN SO WORRIED. I DID NOT PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER, BUT THEN THE THOUGHT CAME INTO MY MIND TO CHECK IF THE FOOD THEY ARE EATING HAS BEEN RECALLED, I HAVE NEVER HAD TO CHECKED THIS BEFORE BECAUSE MY DOGS HAVE BEEN HEALTHY EATING BENEFUL. THE BAG WE HAVE IS CONTAMINATED ! I HAVE BEEN FEEDING THEM FOR A WEEK NOW BEFORE I CAUGHT ON TO THIS AND I'M LUCKY THEY ARE NOT DEAD. I URGE EVERYONE READING THIS TO NEVER EVER EVER KILL YOUR DOGS BY USING THIS PRODUCT! MARS AND ALL THE SO CALLED DOG LOVING EXECUTIVES SHOULD BE SO ASHAMED OF THIS PRODUCT, I PRAY THEY HAD TONS OF LAW SUITS TO HELP THEM REALIZE THAT THEY SHOULD NOT RELEASE PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE LETHAL TO ANIMALS.....MAYBE THEY'RE STANDARDS WILL RISE, MEANWHILE I HOPE MY DOGS DON'T DIE FROM THE SEVERE WHEEZING AND INTERNAL PROBLEMS THEY ARE EXPERIENCING!

Purina

I grew up with purina. I too, have been feeding purina One,Lamb and rice. For some reason, my dog,Nosie Rosie, vomits everything else. My 7 cats like friskies pate' & hard Purina One with furball help. I put Solid Gold Seagreens on everyone's food, even the outdoors cats. The Humane Society, & their (no kill shelter) ,A.S.P.C.A., & Friends of Pets : These people have been my mainstay here in Anchorage,A.K.

recall

My dog is so sick. He lost 2 of his 15 lbs. He has lost most of his appitite. I know I have to call the doctor, but is there any thing to do.. Is he gonna die? I have been feeding him pedigree dog food forever. What symptoms should I watch for. Is weight loss one of them?

pedegree dog food recall

my dog has been eating this tainted dog food all along. with a cup left in the 40 lb bag, I find out it is poisning my dog. He has lost at least 2 of his 15 lbs. He looks so skinny and has no appitite. What should I do now? Obveously call the vet but what if it is too late? Is there anything I could do to get him better? Is he gonna die?

Lost my Aussie tonight :(

Pedigree small bites 40 lb bag and 22 oz can with gravy mixed together in her bowl. First she threw up, last night after feeding but I did not notice since she threw up outside. Then this morning she was lethargic , it progressed to labored breathing and she stopped breathing 18 hours or so from eating. 3rd day of feeding her from a new batch of cans and a new bag of pedigree. I don't have the bag anymore but the can skew is 023100015606. I don't know if it was the cans or the dry but I do know that this dog was healthy, happy and should be alive tonight. Never again will I feed one of my dogs this poision.

Thanks alot Mars!

Thanks to Mars I used to have 10 healthy American Pitbull Terriers and now i have lost two and my only two female pitbull pups. They both we very healthy before i started feeding them pedigree. I had fed my pups last at 3:00 pm and around 8:00 pm they both looked very weak and getting sick. The skew on the bag of pedigree that i was feeding them is 023100227702. This is a shame, because i have been feeding my dogs pedigree for 5 yrs. now. My home has went from a happy home to a sad home thanks to Mars and their poison dog. Now i will be feeding my adults and pups eukanuba a well trusted brand.

Pedigree Large Breed

Our Black Lab who is over 8 years old, was fine Saturday night, however when I got up at 6:30am he did not look good. He was panted and just laying in one spot. I didn't really think to much about his behavior at the time, but when I came back out at 9:30am, he was in the same spot. This isn't normal for him. I woke my husband and we tried to get the dog to get up, or wag his tail or something. He was soooo weak that he couldn't get up. The Vet told us he probably has an intestinal virus since he had a fever and he sent us home with very expensive antibiotics. After 3 days of struggling to get a pill down the dogs throat, he finally felt well enough to eat a piece of lunch meat. He still hasn't eaten any of his dog food since Sunday. I feed him Pedigree Adult. I don't know the UPC because we put the food into a large bucket and throw away the bag. So now I'm out $300 for a vet visit and have to dump 40# of dog food in the trash with no way to re-coup a refund. Thanks, Mars

Very upset Owner

This is ridiculous. I have been trusting Pedigree products for over 15 yrs and stopped feeding them the canned versions when the last recall hit. What do I feed them now? Growing up, our family only fed table scraps to our dog and he lived to be a healthy 16+yrs old, succumbing to old age. Over time, it was made more public that our pets need to have more than table scraps so I always bought the best food I could afford--Pedigree--in hopes my dogs would have the nutrition and ingredients they needed. Why hasn't anyone stepped up to regulate these plants yet? I realize people food is recalled almost daily because of a shortage of inspectors, bad cleaning habits...so I can only assume the pet food plants are even more neglected. My dogs will now eat people food. I will consult my vet on recipes and vitamins and I suggest pet owners everywhere do the same. You wouldn't gamble with your kids' lives everytime you fed them, why gamble your dogs? My pets ate Pedigree up until a week ago, when I found out about this, so I am hoping they are not going to get sick.

Will Not buy anymore

We`will no longer feed our dog any of the Pedigree products. I found out that they put loads of yellow corn products in the food, which will cause your dog to get gain weight and become unhealthy.

We love our dog, she is a big part in our family

Pedigree

My 2 yr old dachshund went to bed as usual on the evening of 9/10/08 at 10 pm and when we awoke at 6 am on 9/11/08, he was dead. He had no known health issues and showed no signs of illness whatsoever. When we discovered him dead , it was obvious that he had been vomiting, bloody diarrhea and hemorrhaged overnight. We could not fathom what could have caused the sudden death of our healthy dog.
Just a few days ago on MSNBC.com I discovered the "voluntary" recall statement of the MARS pet foods. We were feeding our pet Pedigree dry adult small crunchy bits exclusively. He did not receive table scraps.
I saw that the statement from the head of Pedigree was issued on 9/12/08....one day after our beloved little dog's death.
Two days after his death, I became ill with what I believed to be a stomach virus and then my husband and daughter began vomiting with severe diarrhea as well. My oldest daughter, (age 11) did NOT contract the stomach illness...but she also rarely ever fed the dog.
I have notified MARS (but they have not responded), I have also notified the FDA and they took my information but stated that since I do NOT have the lot number from the dogfood bag, they can not report a confirmed case. I threw away my dog's food just after his passed as it wasn't needed and it was too painful for our family and young daughters to see any of his belongings in the house.
I am not interested in any lawsuit as it won't bring back our dog. I only want MARS/Pedigree to be more vigilant with making consumers aware of the dangers as we were not. I am angry.

recall

we bought a 40lb bag..since we have a big shephard..he started eating now for 3 days...2nd day he was sick to his stomach...he nevered before messed the floor....now we have to go buy another brand.. going with Purina..since he has eaten it before with no problems... now i need for Debra Crew

to come and for her to get on her hands and knees to scrub the carpet!!!!!!!!

I am sure an attorney will help us, a nice jewish lawyer at that.....

they don,t need to be in business period!

shame on you pedigree,if you cannot make dogfood safe for our pets then you don,t need to be in business

they don,t need to be in business period!

if pedigree can,t make dogfood safe for our pets consumption then they don,t need to be in business period! i have bought pedigree canned food for my dog, after hearing about this i will nolonger do business with pedigree.my dog eats kibblesnbits homestyle and the kibblesnbits canned food.kibblesnbits is made by delmonte.i trust delmonte foods,i buy their other products such as catsup and spices.delmonte has been in business for over 100 years and is a trustworthy company.the pedigree petfood company should be ashamed of themselves.if restraunts must undergo rigourous inspections then pedigree should have to undergo the same inspections.i,m calling on the FDA to step up to the plate and start inspecting every dogfood plant in the usa.start making dogfood safe for our pets.

BETTER FOODS TO FEED YOUR PETS AND WHY

If your dog has diarrhea mixing rice with their food and even some unflavored Metamucil helps to firm up stool. Pedigree is really not a very good food to begin with. Neither is IAMs Beneful Purina or any of the other foods you have usually heard of. The first several ingredients are usually corn (we know what happens when our body gets corn, we poop it out and don’t use it, same with dogs) meat by products (the take the meat off of whatever it is and you get the bones, feathers, coat, feet, beaks, etc) and white or brewers rice (no nutritional value, just a filler) because of this our dogs need to eat more to get the nutrients they need and poop a lot more too. Also...science diet and eukanuba are not very good foods either. They used to be but they were bought out by other companies who, to save money, changed the ingredients to fillers and by products. These foods cost about the same as the all naturals foods and you are getting pedigree quality food. You can check all the ingredients yourself. Stay away from the first 3 ingredients being corn, by products of any kind, and white or brewer’s rice. Go for foods with chicken, chicken meal, or any meats that don’t have by product after them, and BROWN rice. These are good foods. Try going to a specialty pet store and ask about a better food. Precise, Royal Canin, and Verus are all really good foods. When you look at the ingredients they will be along the lines of Chicken, brown rice (the only rice with nutritional value for dogs), and usually another protein source such as chicken meal (chicken meal is just dehydrated chicken, very good) your dogs will eat much less of the food so even though it cost a bit more you go through less food and it ends up saving you money. They also poop less, live longer, and are overall healthier. I have four shih tzus and I feed them Royal Canin dry food. 10lbs of that food last us over a month. 4 adults dogs eating only 10lbs of food between the 4 of them is pretty good! These foods are also all natural and organic so they are never involved in any recalls; you know your food is always safe. Go to your local pet store and ask about these brands (Precise, Royal Canin, Verus, Wellness, California Natural, Innova, Canidae, Merrik) many stores, such as Pets Plus, will even give you your money back for the dog food if your dog doesn’t like it and has programs such as buy 10 bags get your 11th free. It's worth a try and trust me your dogs will love it.

My three dogs are all sick!! Florida

Thanks Mars for taking SO LONG to pull the food from ALL the states. We live in South Florida and our three dogs all eat Pedigree. They have all been sick these last three weeks, vomiting, etc.

I'm calling my lawyer and you will here from us!!!

Unsure

The adult complete (40# bag) is not recalled?

Also, cans (22 oz) are OK?

it's all nuts

you know not for nothing but don't you think its time to take a look at the way things used to be done and the fact this crap didnt happen years ago whats changed??????? and why do our pets have to suffer????does anyone care about anythign anymore????

One year-old

This last weekend, September 12-14, our little one year-old granddaughter was visiting and found some of the dry dog food left in our Chihuahuas' bowls. I gathered her up and the dog food dishes as well. I took what I saw in her mouth out, however, I am sure she chewed up some pieces. That night and the next day she was fussy and wouldn't eat and had diarrhea and vomiting. By Sunday she felt better but definitely not her old self. This morning we heard of the recall on the news. The sack of Pedigree we bought did not have the two UPC codes but the sack said mini crunchy bites, two times easier to crunch. I am mortified that I could have been responsilbe for making my granddaughter sick! I called my son and he said she isn't up to snuff but the diarrhea has stopped. I hope this is all a coincidence. My question is: Is it possible to become sick with salmonella that doesn't require hospitalization?

Our little dogs feces don't look right either. I will be making a trip to Wal-Mart with this bag and making an appointment with the vet for our three little dogs tomorrow.

PEDIGREE LITTLE CHAMPIONS

I always buy Pedigree 12 pouch variety pack ground dinners, my dog LOVES it! But I noticed in the last
two boxes I purchased, the food out of two of the pouches were "different".

one pouch had very little solid food in it and "alot" of ??? water???

the Other pouch had the solid food in it, but it also had "alot of "water"? The rest of the box was ok.;

Is this normal?? It is the first time I've ever seen this in the 4years i've been giving it to her..
Buford, Georgia

Scooter

what would happen if my dog die cause of this recall? Who do we contact? I love my dog and want the person responsible for his death. I hope this is not the case.

Thanks Janet
