Pedigree has announced a voluntary dog and pet food recall of Mars brands from its Everson plan and Tops market are alson announcing the recall from the shelves.

Mars Pet Food recall from Pedigree is a Class I recall, which means that this is the most serious. Eating the food may cause health problems or even death.

Here is the letter from Debra Crew (Pedigree US General Manager) about the dog food recall.

Today, we're announcing a voluntary recall of selected bags of PEDIGREE Small Crunchy Bites Complete Nutrition and PEDIGREE Large Breed Food For Dogs, both of which are made in our Everson, PA facility. Thankfully, there haven't been any reports of pets being affected by our food in this recall; however, we feel we must take this action as a precautionary measure after we were alerted of a possible link between dry dog pet food produced at the Everson plant and two isolated cases of people infected by Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

While none of the pet foods found in the homes were determined to contain Salmonella, the strain of Salmonella Schwarzengrund involved in the illnesses was detected in the Everson plant where some PEDIGREE products are produced.

You should know that we have numerous facilities throughout the country and Everson represents a very small portion of our manufacturing base (2.7%) of total PEDIGREE production. Rest assured, you can continue to have confidence in the quality and safety of products produced at all our other facilities.

We realize how important dogs are to your family. We are dog lovers too. And implementing this safety measure immediately is the best way we can protect them, their owners and the families who feed and trust PEDIGREE.

Please know we are doing all we can to make sure that these foods are no longer on store shelves. If, however, you believe you have purchased products affected by this voluntary recall, please return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. If you want more information on specific product details and other information please visit www.petcare.mars.com

As the makers of PEDIGREE, our number one priority has always been, and continues to be, the health and welfare of pets and their owners.

Sincerely
Debra Crew
General Manager

#1 Re: Salmonella Prompts Tops, Pedigree Pet, Dog Food Recall

Looks like the problem with Pedigree dog food isn't quite solved yet. I fed my dog some Pedigree adult complete nutrition dry food in November 2011 and he became very lethargic. The bag was half full, so the contamination wasn't throughout the bag. My dog did not have bloody diarea which happens to some dogs with salmonella, so I'm not certain what the contaminant was in this case. I am also very sure he didn't eat anything else around the house that may have caused this. A visit to the vet was inconclusive, since my dog was empty inside from not having eaten for five days before the visit. Blood test and x-rays were done too. The vet did help my dog to start eating a prescription dog food and he got better three weeks later. When I ran out of the prescription food, I gave my dog the Pedigree again. He became very sick and lethargic the next morning and when I came home from work that day, he was dead in the yard.

Im very angery! Not only do i find out that im posioning our Lab but also my 1 yr old little boy has been gettting into the dog food. He has eatin handfulls and i had no clue it would make him sick are cause death. I will never buy petagree agin. Bettter yet i dont trust any dog food companys. My family pet will eat table food.

#3 Pet Food

Most bagged foods are horrible. i wouldn't feed them to a rat. Pedigree made my dogs very sick so,like many, i switched to Purina. My dogs got sick from the purina also, I personally believe contamination is not the issue in some cases. What these companies are putting in our pets food is the real issue! I have heard/read some horrible stories and fortunately i am one of the lucky ones who's story has a happy ending. I now give my two dogs a cooked meal every night consisting of rice (brown rice is preferred but white rice will do), boiled chicken (breasts or leg quarters) and cooked carrots. I have been feeding them this new diet for three months now and i am happy to say my dogs are as healthy as they were the day i got them. No more diarhea, lathargicness or vomitting, which all can lead to death. Thank god i read some of these articles and comments! I am urging ALL pet owners to switch your pets diet to a healthy one today! If you are feeding them Pedigree or any other cheap food you are slowly killing the pet you love so dearly regardless of what any veterinarian may tell you. As a pet lover i can only hope atleast one person reads this and saves the life of their dog or someone elses. God bless.....

#4 Homecooked diet

" I now give my two dogs a cooked meal every night consisting of rice (brown rice is preferred but white rice will do), boiled chicken (breasts or leg quarters) and cooked carrots "

You are creating all kinds of imbalances in your dog. Carrots, rice and chicken is not a balanced diet. Your dog might seem fine now, but
you are going to find out shortly that this diet is causing a problem.

#5 sick from pedigree

My dog has had repeated bouts of vomiting, and diarrhea for months. He has been on five different meds and supplements to no avail. Vet thought it was a sensitive stomach. How about pedigree dog food. He had recent bouts of vomiting and diarrhea was put on homemade bland meals got better. Started him back on pedigree he got sick again. Back on bland diet for a couple of weeks. Started pedigree canned again within a few hours he had diarrhea and vomiting I knew it was the food. Called pedigree told them the situation, I was told that they could only check for production problems. The fat or protein contents could be to high. But they can't test for bacteria etc, because they don't have a labratory. I have fed pedigree dry and canned for years, and I can't believe that they are so flip about this. I have been in many web sites and I am angry about what I am reading. Pedigree needs to stop production on all there food canned and dry until they find out the source of the problem. I will never feed Pedigree again. Mars is only concerned about there bottom line not the health and well being of our pets. My boy is now on another brand of canned and dry and is doing wonderful. He is not taking any medication or supplements, and is now the healthiest he has been in a while.

A faithful Human

#6 Never again

My friend just got a puppy for her birthday a few days ago and was told by the vet that the only food it could have was Pedigree. "If it has anything other than Pedigree it can get very sick". (I have no idea why she didn't come ask me, I would have told her myself that her vet was a load of bull. I feed my dogs Natural Choice, Science Diet, and Blue Buffalo) So she was all worked up about getting only the best for her dog, bought Pedigree, and her pup died yesterday. She's trying to sue the woman who sold her the food, but I'm trying to convince her that its the company. This is ridiculous. People are just so damn greedy that they wouldn't force-recall to ensure the well-being of our pets for fear they'll lose money. Horrid...

#7 I've fed Pedigree for years

I've not had a problem with my dog being sick and this is the first i've heard of the recall. My dog has never turned her nose up at her food and is very healthy. She does not get canned food often and I don't keep the bags once I our them in the can I keep her food in.

I would hate to have to switch foods with her as she has a sensitive stomach and does not do well when switching.

#8 All three of my dogs were sick!

I have three dogs, various sizes... All of them have been sick at different times the past few weeks. I fed them Pedigree dry and canned food. I used to feed them (dry) Purina Little Bites and never saw any evidence of being sick at their stomachs. Probably will go back to Purina. Better safe than sorry! As for the Pedigree canned food, my dogs don't seem to like it as much as they once did. I may go back to Science Diet canned food. They seemed to like that very much.

I just can't understand why these manufacturers cannot maintain a constant assurance of quality. It takes diligence and a dedication to maintain the integrity of their product. Closer attention must be paid to making absolute certain their foods are healthful. In other words, "I wouldn't sell to you something that I wouldn't feed my own dogs!!"

#9 Canned food

Last week we switched our dog to Pedigree canned food. She was immediately very ill: vomiting, lethargic and she had a fever, the vet said it might have been an infection or something she ate. We took her off the Pedigree right away, and she has been better. She does not eat Pedigree dry food. Does anyone know if the canned food has been affected? Have other dogs been sick from the canned food?

#10 Disappointed!

I have given my dog Pedigree since he was a puppy and he is 3 years old now. Recent recalls, especially this one, has prompted me to stop giving my dog Pedigree. My dog is one of the family and if anything ever happened to him, I would be devestated. He did throw up several times the other day and I did not think anything because he has done this before after eating too fast, but now I know why. He is fine now, thank God! My condolences to the people who have lost part of their family due to this.

What makes this even worse is that I went to Petsmart last night, where I purchased the Pedigree, and they were unaware of the recall! The bag of dog food I had did have the exact bar code numbers listed in the letter. They did allow me to exchange it for another brand, but I just could not believe that a major pet store was unaware of the recall. Whoever is in charge of this problem needs to be fired!! EVERY store that sells Pedigree should have been aware of this recall....animals have died from this and it is ludacris that everyone does not know. Pedigree needs to announce this recall on national TV before more pets lives are taken. I WILL NEVER USE PEDIGREE AGAIN!

One last thought, I empathize with all the people who have lost their pets.
